Summer Decathlon

I belong to a local running club called the Steeplechasers (not because we jump over stuff into water, but because Frederick has a handful of church steeples in downtown.) Each summer they have running events over the course of ten Wednesday evenings - thus the name Summer Decathlon.

We've only made it to two but they've been a lot of fun. Even Jake has run some events.  Hank is at DeeDee's this week so he missed out on the fun, but the rest of us were there and ready to go.

Hanging out waiting for the guy with the key to the gate

The little kids play on the field while the big kids and grownups run.

Jake running the 1500. He won't admit it, but he went out way too hard and ending up needing to slow way down. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and take off...I do it all the time!

One kid brought a football and played catch with Shane. The kid got distracted and forgot to keep playing so Shane stood there yelling, "Dude! Hey, dude! Play with me! What you name? Dude!" It was hilarious because he was so serious.

The little kids lining up for their race. The first week they started at the 50M mark, and the starting line backs up about 10M each week.

Shane runs about twice as far because he runs all over the track. He hasn't mastered the whole stay in your lane thing.

The grown ups ran the 1500. I finished in 7:33 which is about an 8:20ish mile. Jake's time was a little more than 6 if I remember correctly.

The little kids ran their race after the 1500 and then the grown ups ran a fun run 5K around the track.  Running 12 1/2 laps around a track isn't my idea of fun (it's boring and I have the attention span of a gnat) so I didn't run it. Jake did though and seemed to enjoy it, but I don't recall his time.

We can't wait for next week!
