Will paddle for ice cream

One of the funnest things to do here in Broomes Island is kayak. It's such an equal opportunity activity; everyone - young, old, fit, or couch potato - can enjoy puttering around in a kayak.

On the other side of the river from us, about half a mile away, is Glass Beach. So named by Ella and Aunt Sally because sea glass tends to wash up on it. Ella has a nice glass and shell collection from our last trip here, and she's gathering more and planning craft projects.

We made the trip over on Tuesday morning (or was it afternoon? I love being on vacation because it doesn't matter!) and found quite a bit more.

If you look closely, you can see that Hank's kayak is tethered to mine. He's a pretty good paddler, but I feel better knowing he's not going to drift off to sea...well, not unless I do, too.

That evening I had a hankering for ice cream so I tried to convince the kids it would be a great idea to kayak the 2+ miles around the point to the marina. Then I realized the time and opted for Plan B.... we paddled across the river, lifted the kayaks onto someone's yard and walked a couple of blocks across the point to the marina. We would have never made it before they closed if we had paddled all the way around.

The Machen homestead is directly behind the kids

Yum!

On days like this I can totally envision us living on a island and paddling or boating to get places. Then I remember that it gets really cold in the winter and having to boat through a storm for a gallon of milk isn't so appealing afterall.

But we're very happy to enjoy it while we can!

Kayaking is so much fun! And it's a great family activity. Sounds like a great vacation to me!

Thank you for being the only one who didn't think my list was outrageous! Heh.
