We got there early, just before 10, during the week and the beach was not crowded at all. The woman in the Visitor's Center said not to even bother trying to come on the weekend as they are filled to capacity all summer long and have to turn cars away.
More school/daycare groups started coming closer to lunch time and the beach started to fill up, but even then it wasn't bad - until....Hunter showed up.
Now Hunter was a cute little 2 year old boy. His siblings were all quite a bit bigger and could swim so they left him with his mom...who was busy talking to her friend and not playing with him.
What's a 2 year old boy to do? Find his own friends and try to play with them. We were the lucky (?) folks closest to him.
Hunter is in the lower left corner, with the mohawk (I didn't know people still did that to their kids!!)
Hank and Jake made cool boat ramps. They dug a pool and then a ramp from the pool to the lake. They put their boats in the pool, filled it with water, and watched their boats go to the lake. They worked to tweak their design so the boats went fast. They worked hard on a series of these. And Hunter? Well, he stomped across them and dug his own pools in their ramps. I *think* he was trying to help.
The boys moved their operation down the beach so Shane was stuck with Hunter who kept taking Shane's stuff. Honestly, Shane is a brute and I'm not sure what kept him from clobbering Hunter.
In the end they did try to work out a treaty and dig harmoniously.
Then we headed off to the picnic area for some lunch and played on the playground before heading home.
