They're on a roll today...
We're sitting at the table eating lunch and talking about the things we're thankful for.
Hank is thankful for his little brother and he asked Ella how to say 'little' in Chinese (she has no idea, that I'm aware of anyway)
She said some jibberish word and Hank said
No, that's how they say it in Ohio. I want to know how they say little in Chinese.
Ha!
You must do the things you think you cannot do.

Watch that language!
Oh my goodness, these kids just crack me up.
Ella apparently stepped on Hank's head while they were playing and hurt him. He jumped up to confront her and she just skipped away (I'm not sure she realized she hurt him).
He pointed his finger at her and yelled, 'You come back here! You, you Mr. Bad Girl!!'

Good night
I like to think the kids are the messy ones here, but tonight alone...
I spilled Bill's beer on his lap while he was holding his million-dollar work laptop (just a couple of drops on his puter, thankfully!)
I spilled a bunch of wine
Bill knocked over my newly filled glass of wine while helping me clean up my mess
Then he spilled Shane's cup of juice while putting it on the counter.
You may think we were a bit tipsy when this all occurred, but you'd be wrong, his beer was his first one and full. My wine was my first (of two...so don't sweat) and newly filled.
Shane's juice...we've looked into a 12 step program and have scheduled an intervention for mid-week. :)

Ella's career as an artist
Ella may have career as an artist...she's already bringing in a little bit of money.
She won a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop for her pumpkins.
In early October, our Friday morning co-op sponsored a walk a thon for the homeless. One of the families in our church helps to run the rescue mission in Frederick so our proceeds went to that.
Anyhoo, I forgot to fill out the forms until the night before, and each of us (all 5 of us!) needed our own form. Our street address is kinda long and it was just a lot of writing when I needed to be packing lunches and laying out clothes so I was rushing around.
On the back of the forms was a drawing of a t-shirt and the kids could draw whatever they wanted and come up with their own slogan for next year's shirts.
Well Little Miss did her thang while I was running around like a crazy person. I don't even remember what she drew or what slogan she came up with (maybe Jake helped her??).
She won 3rd prize and a $10 gift card to WalMart. woot!
Now Bill and I have decided to send her out to his mom's house for some lessons. Gam can paint. She can paint flowers, houses, people, you name it. And it's darn good, seriously. So we figure we'll take advantage of this incredible resource and get Ella some art training for free. Gam is also a good cook so Ella will be doubly happy. Now we just need to let Gam know about her new job. :)

Nature table....Do you have one???
I have a handful of blogs I follow for school and craft ideas. It seems all the really cool moms have nature tables.
We had one too, before I knew what it was. Just a little table in the dining room to hold the little treasures we find on our adventures.
We had too many treasures to fit on our little side table - and I felt a little weird having all this dirty (but very cool!) stuff in the dining room. So Jake and I dragged one of Grandpop's trunks up from the basement and put it in the school hallway. Now we have room for even more cool stuff and I have a basket next to it with all their journals, field guides and binoculars. Organized + Accessible = Happy mommy
Hank found both robin's nests that are there. He also found a perfect, mint condition, gorgeous (can you tell I was impressed??) Goldfinch nest. This baby was stunning. One of the dogs ate it. Literally, there were only crumbs on the floor. The guilty party will remain nameless but SHE also ate part of one of the robin's nest. I thought Hank was either going to cry or kill her..in the end he cried. Sad day in the Machen house. :(
But we reassured him, we would continue to look for more feathers and nests. He was only mildly appeased. Perhaps he's still harboring murderous thoughts?? I know I was....
Wednesday at co-op Mrs H walked the kids through a drawing of a wild turkey as we studied a little about James Audubon. She was concerned Ella, as the youngest in the class, wouldn't be able to keep up. Well Mrs H didn't know that my little peanut is an Arteest. As Ella was drawing with her classmates, she loudly and proudly proclaimed, "I'm an artist, ya know." More on that later...
On the lower left, is actually Hank's drawing. Ella's turkey is surrounded by flowers because, "turkeys like flowers because they're pretty and smell good." You didn't know that did ya?

And this camera fiend popped up while I was trying to take the above picture. He looks a little battle worn. He scratched himself while sleeping last night (I guess he needs a manicure), he jabbed his upper gum while brushing and made it bleed- a lot. And those red cheeks are a result of a bite of ice cream and a lick of a cheesey bagel bite - 2 days ago. I won't describe his diapers for you- and thank goodness he's still in diapers. :)
All in all another exciting, crazy week.

The tree
Out of order :)
Ok, so I'm actually thinkin' ahead to my Jesse Tree and wanted to get my branches into the house for it. I figured I'd do a little Thanksgiving deco while I was at it. So below we have handprint leaves with some dixie cup turkeys. The boys were reluctant participants so Ella and I did most of the painting, coloring and cutting.

Muscleman Jake chopping away

I never thought my curtains were so busy, but this picture looks a little crazy Sorry about that.
Blogapalooza
I'm getting ready to head out of town tomorrow after church, come home and then head back out again so I have a busy week ahead of me.
I figured I'd better go through my pix before I forget what they're all about.
Last week we went to the Brunswick Railroad Museum and the C&O Canal Museum for a field trip with our Tapestry C0-Op.
The second floor is super cool hands on stuff for kids. The neatest thing was a computer attached to a telegraph machine. You could type something in and then hear it in Morse Code.Below is Ella looking at picture cards, like an old fashioned View Master.

Hank and J dressing up for the obligatory group shot. These kids have been such good sports for their camera-happy moms.

My big guy. Don't know why he looks sad; he had a good time.

My princess.

The railroad museum rocked. And for only $1 (for school groups), you really can't beat it. The Canal part - the real reason we were there - was only mediocre. The guide hadn't prepared at all and expected the kids to lead the discussion. You win some and you lose some and the kids did have fun looking at the model trains so it wasn't a loss at all.

Shane's new shirt
Shane spent the day with Aunt Honey a couple of weeks ago. She has come out of the closet as a Skins fan and was sportin' her jersey that day (she used to cheer for the Cowboys, but I think she converted to maintain marital harmony).
Shane kept talking about her 'football shirt' so they headed off to the store to see if they could find one in his size.
Aunt Honey told us he was so excited to find a football shirt that he carried it all through the store. He wore all that day, the next, and part of the next until I coaxed it off of him to wash it.
He gets down in a 3 point stance and says what sounds like 'set, set; Go!" and then he takes off running. He's big, strong and fearless, but with his propensity to break things (arms, legs, etc) I don't know how long his NFL career will last.

Doncha just want to smooch those big squishy cheeks! He's oh so rotten, but he's that much cuter.

Ella 5th Birthday
It is so hard to believe Ella is 5! Where does the time go. She's still the size of a peanut but she is such a big girl in so many other ways. She's a beautiful girl with an even more beautiful heart.
We love you girlie!
Ok they're in reverse order, kind of...
My 3 super heroes battling before dinner

Shane enjoying his cake. Notice his hair on the left side. That gooey white stuff....diaper cream. I've been scrubbing the dickens out of his hair and he still smells funny.

Voting pictures and a Shane story
Here are the kids on the way in. I wanted to take pictures of them inside but the guy almost had a heart attack when he heard me tell the kids to line up and smile. I guess that's a No Please.

Something happened to Shane while we were in there and he lost his mind. We may have people calling to have us pay for the hearing aides they now need. The boy has some lungs.

Hank really wanted to take a picture of me and Ella. He's a pretty good photographer for a 6 year old goof ball. :)

My days are never quiet or dull. Never.
His new amazing trick is to open the oven while it's on. He likes to check his 'hots' (fries). It's kinda dangerous to open a 400 degree oven so now we have to remember to stay in the kitchen the whole time we're cooking anything.
Case in point - Just tonight, I had the other two in the back of the house brushing their teeth. Bill walked back to tell me something and came back to the kitchen. Our little blonde bundle of joy had used his chair to climb onto the counter. Then he climbed onto the stove. He was kneeling on it and leaning over a hot pot of rice while fiddling with the stove controls. Bill was in the back *maybe* a minute.
This kid scares me. Pray for us; pray for him! Just imagine what he could accomplish if he used his fearlessness and sooper-smarts for good things! :)

Don't Forget to Vote Tomorrow!
As usual, I will take all 4 kiddos with me and we'll talk about the great privilege we enjoy....voting. This year is particularly important and Mr Alcorn explains much better than I ever could - http://randyalcorn.blogspot.com/

Just another Saturday
Of course they're not in order. :)
Girlie has a stuffy nose and fever so she's in bed listening to Chinese folk songs (her choice). Hank went in, prayed for her, offered to run to the pharmacy for her and then brought his lunch in so she wouldn't have to eat alone. Shane, of course, had to join the fun. Ella may eventually get some rest.
Yep, they're all 3 in one room. We figured as a 17 y/o, Jake needed his own room and finishing the basement just hasn't made it to the top of the budget list. They actually enjoy sharing a room and since Jake reads to them before they go to sleep, he likes that it's one-stop story reading time.

Grandpop has had a rough week so the kids painted pictures for him. Shane is toying with the idea of one day peeing on the potty so he prefers to run around the house nekkie so here he is painting in the buff. Of course painting just isn't painting until you get some on you. Kinda like bbq I guess. :)
